What type of disabilities qualify for an ABLE account?

Any disability that meets the criteria for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and developed before the age of 46, is eligible for an ABLE account. Some of the conditions recognized by the Social Security Administration that could qualify based on the level of severity include: blindness, Down Syndrome, hearing loss (deafness), epilepsy, autism/Asperger, and more.

If you do not currently receive SSI or SSDI, you might still qualify for an ABLE account. If you’re not receiving benefits because you have too many assets or income, you can ask a licensed physician or psychiatrist to sign a Diagnosis Form stating that you meet the SSI/SSDI definition of “disability.”
